The preparation of the sixth edition of Marks' Handbook has been under the supervision of a new editor. He has approached this task with a full recognition of his responsibility. The Handbook, through its previous five editions, has established itself in the field of engineering literature so that it can be rightfully called a clissic. The editor has been cognizant of this situation and has therefore approached the problem of modernization with a sense of humility.
